If you step out of the French windows at my friend Isabelle’s house, where I was stayed last weekend, this is the view from the terrace. From the kitchen you can take in the sailing boats bobbing up and down and the sun sparkling on the water.
Pass through the garden gate and it’s two steps to the jetty where the ferry arrives to take you to the islands in the Gulf of Morbihan and the children can dive off after the day trippers have gone home. Look out the back from the bedrooms and you can see the mud flats at low tide, which are kept as a nature reserve for the sea birds.

Isabelle’s husband discovered the house and bought it many years ago when he came jogging around this small peninsula of Conleau. This is not their holiday home, unlike many of the houses in the area which is a favourite place for Parisiennes to have a second home. They’re lucky enough to live here all the time.
Just down the path and you’re at Le Roof hotel where you can stay with the same view or have an elegant drink on their terrace. Or if you prefer something a little more authentic there’s the small bar further along where you can get snacks and ice creams too. Conleau (which means a peninsula) is on the outskirts of Vannes and it’s very popular with those who come for the day to swim, relax and picnic here. There’s a free bus in summer from the centre or take the public bus all year round or hire one of the public yellow and purple bikes.
I wish I lived with such a lovely view, don’t you?

Stunning Heather… totally hooked on that part of France. My wife and I are seriously contemplating hiring out a little cottage down that way in March - what should I not mis?

the only part of the coast I’ve really explored in depth is Vannes, but that’s a lovely old Medieval city with attractive old streets, restaurants, a Cathedral & plenty of chic shops. The castle area is picturesque but it’s more about admiring the formal gardens as I don’t think you actually go inside the building.
I’d definitely try to take a day trip to one of the islands in the Gulf of Morhiban - we went to Houat & you could make it even more special by staying overnight on some of the small hotels on those islands. Research the ferries that go from Vannes or other towns in advance and book them in advance.
If you like sailing then the coast is ideal with lots of bays and inlets - Carnac is a good base and a busy resort although it should be nice in March but packed in August. There’s also plenty of cycling routes along the coast and on the islands.
