A River trip in London up the Thames to Greenwich – Video

September 3, 2009 by admin

If you’re looking for a way to see the sights in London that barely costs more than the price of a tube ticket, then try looking at London a different way – from the River.

In past centuries, the river Thames was the main route for transport in the city and many major landmarks, both old and new face the Thames. We took the regular Thames Clipper service, which is designed for commuters, rather than for tourists, along the Thames from Embankment pier to Greenwich.

I’d highly recommend the service which is slick and comfortable, with outdoor and indoor seating. If you want a shorter tour, then take the service from Embankment to Tower Bridge and then either come back the same way, or get off and explore, then return by tube. If you’re looking for a great day trip, then continue to Greenwich, where there are many historic sights to see and most of them are free too.

Sight-seeing by river is something that you never think about. London is so huge that I never even got to see the Thames up close. I just discovered a similar ride on the Chicago river in hometown.

What a great suggestion. River travel is so much more relaxing than fighting folks on buses and trains. As a visitor, you’d also get to see much more – and all for a similar price.
