When you start a holiday, you’re always eager to see as many sights as you can, but if you get too excited, you end up seeing them all, and if you’re holidaying over the course of a week or fortnight, you find yourself bored with a few days still to go. Fortunately, when visiting Cardiff, you won’t have that problem.

Visit Cardiff, Capital of Wales

Many people don’t have the time to go on a week-long break, but day and night breaks can be just as relaxing. You can take in plenty of sights, with time left to have a meal at one of the Welsh capital’s outstanding restaurants before retreating to one of those comfortable, welcoming Cardiff hotels for a great night’s sleep.

As you would expect from a capital city, Cardiff is jam packed with attractions. It has numerous parks, sporting and cultural venues, historical sites, top-class shops and eateries, all of which make the city a fantastic place to spend a weekend in.

Wales Millennium Centre

The Millenium Stadium, the home of the Welsh national rugby union team, is one of Europe’s largest purpose-built sporting venues. As well as hosting top-class sporting events, the stadium also hosts concerts for rock and pop groups, plus the amazing Welsh National Opera.

Cardiff plays host to Wales’ National Museum and Art Gallery, which puts on various exhibitions with relevance to both the local area and the wider world. Admission is free, so if you’re holidaying with children, this is an ideal place for the whole family to visit.

Shopping in St David's

Parks are plentiful in Cardiff, and if you’re looking for a peaceful weekend, then a stroll through Bute Park on the edge of the city centre, or Roath Park, which lies within its leafy suburbs could be the answer. Cardiff has more parkland per capita than any other major city in the UK, so you’re spoilt for choice.

Other attractions of note include St. David’s Hall, which is one of the country’s best concert halls, the magnificent Cardiff Castle and the inspiring St. David’s Cathedral. Shopping in Cardiff is a joy, particularly around precincts such as St. David’s, Royal Arcade and the Capitol Centre.

Cardiff Castle

Once you’ve taken in all the sights, then why not cap off your day by having a meal at one of the many top-class restaurants in the breathtakingly modern Cardiff Bay area. Eateries such as Signor Valentino’s, Bosphorus Turkish Restaurant and Miller and Carter Restaurant and Bar offer flavours from South Wales and beyond, and are guaranteed to re-energise you after taking in all the sights of this wonderful, underrated city.

Eating out in Cardiff

When you’ve finished your meal, then you’re able to retreat to a quality hotel such as the Ibis Hotel Cardiff Gate and sleep soundly in a freshly-made bed knowing that you’ve had the best day break imaginable, and if there’s anywhere you didn’t see, you can always come back for another trip.

As the weather warms up, this article from Ellis Brigham Mountain Sports will give you some great ideas for inspirational but not too demanding one day walks in beautiful Wales. Ready to ramble? Then choose one of these accessible and easy routes in Wales.

It’s fair to say that when you think of walks in Wales, imposing peaks, undulating hills and valleys and precarious coastal pathways spring to mind more readily than easy and accessible walking routes. Yet there are plenty of less challenging strolls to embark upon that will still enable you to enjoy the breathtaking countryside scenery – without turning you into some kind of reluctant extreme off road hiker. However, it’s still worth noting that the weather in Wales can sometimes be inclement (who’d have thought it!), so even if you consider the walk an ‘easy’ one make sure you have the right kit in case you’re caught in the rain or wind.

Here’s a selection to whet your appetite and make sure rambling’s on your mind…

Aberffraw, with view across to the Llyn peninsula.

1. Anglesey – St Beuno and St Cwyfan

These two circular walks – two and four miles respectively – are very flat and involve the coast path and Ffraw estuary, starting and ending at the village of Aberffraw.

2. Anglesey – Caer y Twr

An Iron Age hill fort on top of Holyhead mountain is accessible via a well-trodden track from the café car park. There are remains of the base of the tower, and the fort’s advantageous position makes it a site of ancient historical interest.

3. Snowdonia – Morfa Nefyn to Porth Dinllaen

Take in panoramic views of the peninsula on this mostly flat walk across all kinds of terrain, beginning with the beach. Keep your eyes peeled: you might even spot a few seals and porpoises…

4. Bangor – Llandegai Village

Strike out from Llandegai and head for the village of Llanllechid. Prepare to check out the Rhiw Goch hill fort and expansive vistas over the Menai Straits.

The beautiful Mawddach estuary.

5. Dolgellau – Barmouth

There are a number of gentler strolls involving Barmouth, a historic town situated between the sea and the mountains at the South West corner of Snowdonia National Park. The Mawddach Estuary and Fairbourne & Barmouth Railway offer other accessible diversions.

6. Betws-y-Coed – Conwy

This short but sweet circular walk starts out at the Conwy Valley railway station, crosses to the Conwy Valley Rail Museum, then passes by St Michael’s Church, and continues sandwiched between the golf course and riverbank. Finally, you’ll come to a farm and a Motor Museum, of all things, before returning to the station car park.

The beautiful Ceredigion coastline – much like the Pembrokeshire coastline, but quieter!

7. Penbryn to Llangrannog – Ceredigion

Penbryn Beach to Llangrannog, nine miles from Cardigan Bay, is a coastal treat of a stroll along a wildlife-packed two-mile stretch. It also takes in the Castell Bach Iron Age fort, and rounds off in the village with its two pubs, shop and café.

8. Talacre – Clwyd

This two-hour beach and occasionally tarmac path route features superb wide-angle views, an atmospheric lighthouse, dune-bound yet flat terrain and an RSPB hide, plus easy opportunities to extend your walk. Beware the tide however…

The lighthouse at Talacre, noted for numerous ghostly sightings.

9. Chirk Castle and the Ceiriog Valley, Wrexham

A beautiful river walk of around three hours, with varied scenery courtesy of the Ceiriog Valley (aka Little Switzerland). Plus there’s the National Trust-owned castle built in 1310 by King Edward I to explore.

10. Bosherston Lakes, Stackpole Estate, Pembrokeshire National Park

A haven for otters and other wildlife, the Stackpole Estate also has great accessible walking through woodland from the Stackpole Centre, around the picturesque Bosherston Lakes. More challenging circular routes radiate out from here to take in cliffs, beaches and bird colonies.

My thanks for this sponsored post to Ellis Brigham, who offer a full range of trekking and walking clothes and camping equipment online and in any one of their 25 stores. Pop in and see them for any of your walking kit needs.

How do you find the perfect campsite for your family? If the responsibility for organising a family camping trip falls on your shoulders, you may be forgiven for thinking it’s a thankless task. Decisions, decisions – should you go for the full-on holiday-park campsite with all the facilities or choose somewhere smaller for that back-to-nature experience?

Trericket Mill camping in Wales

For one thing you can’t control the weather, yet if it pours the disappointed faces will be turned in your direction. If you experience some damp days you’ll wish that you’d booked that larger site with swimming pool, games room and some indoor space to shelter from the showers. On the other hand, if the weather’s glorious, there’s nothing better than pottering about in some unspoilt beauty spot with amazing views, far from any amenities or civilisation, as epitomised by the Tiny Campsite style of camping.

I think we found the perfect balance last year at Trericket Mill in Wales, when we booked a bunk-room for shelter, yet camped in the old orchard with ducks and chickens for company and went swimming in a deep plunge pool in the mountain stream that ran through the site. Should the weather have been really unkind we would have retired to the guest sitting room in the main mill house and ordered a home cooked vegetarian meal.

Bucklegrove Campsite near Cheddar, Somerset

This year I thought I’d found a great combination in Bucklegrove campsite near Cheddar in Somerset. Only an hour from where we live in Bristol, it is easily accessible by public transport – useful when you have hoards of teenagers and only one car for transport. The famous Cheddar caves are just down the road and there’s glorious walking on the Mendip Hills. The campsite itself is a well-kept family-run place with spotless amenities and colourful hanging baskets everywhere. We found that we had the best of both worlds with a swimming pool, a small shop and a family bar where you can relax with a drink and the paper. If you don’t want to join the neat rows of mobile homes, caravans and large family tents in the main site, you can opt for the wilder option in the camping field next door with bags of space between the tents, room to play a game of cricket or two and a fabulous view of the Cheddar countryside.

But I think that my family’s tastes are erring on the wild side. When I asked my daughter whether she and her friends had enjoyed staying at the campsite she said yes, but the swimming pool had been rather packed with other children for their taste. Next year, perhaps we could find a campsite with a lake to swim in? The search for the perfect campsite goes on ….

Have you found you perfect campsite yet?

As soon as my husband stepped into our Welsh holiday cottage at Laswern Fawr in the Brecon Beacons and saw the wood burning stove in the open fireplace and the cosy red velvet wing chair, he settled in and took charge of the fire while the rest of us made ourself at home. I concluded that it’s a man thing to fiddle with logs, bellows and firelighters and left him to it.

Sitting room at Laswern Fawr, Brecon Beacons, Wales

We’d arrived in two cars from Bristol following the extremely detailed directions, turning off the main road through the valley and up the hill on increasingly steep and narrow, muddy tracks, along an old tramway then down a steep drive to the cottage, built into the hillside. The 16th century stone farmhouse is surrounded by fields of grazing sheep, and above it rose the Welsh hills covered with bracken, rocky cliff faces with many walking trails. The views from the cottage down into the valley and the small town of Crickhowell were stunning and we soon felt relaxed and at one with nature in a place where walking boots, wellies and waterproofs are in daily use.

Remote as our Welsh cottage at Laswern Fawr may have been, it was certainly not lacking in comforts and was as well equipped as any family home you might find. The owners of the cottage obviously love the place and come here regularly, as there was no trace of that impersonal feel that you get in some holiday accommodation. The furnishings were warm and comfortable with traditionally whitewashed stone walls, plenty of sofas, stools and easy chairs for lounging in comfort and the sort of antique furniture, ornaments and china that you might find in a good country antique shop. To the background tick-tock and hourly chimes of the old clock on the wall, I could almost imagine myself to be a country farmer’s wife, setting the kettle on the blackened range for a cup of tea.

Upstairs we found three double rooms and two singles, sleeping 8 people in all and ideal for two families or an extended group to enjoy a relaxing break. We’d elected to spend a few days away from it all in the school holidays, bringing two of our children and a gaggle of their teenage friends to get away from the bustle and traffic of Bristol. As well as the large family bathroom with bath and separate shower, there was a smart, slate-tiled en-suite shower room in the master bedroom which we grown-ups managed to bag just in time. Because of the cottage being built into the hill side, we actually had French windows where the occasional sheep might come and peer in.

Our comfortable bed even had an electric blanket and the bedroom was calm and cream with thick crewel embroidered curtans, easy chair and an original fireplace. In the other rooms were twin or single beds, with cheerfully coloured duvets or patchwork quilt bedspreads. The hay-loft bedroom, bagged by our boys had a steeply sloping ceiling , blue patchwork quilts and a cot for those travelling with babies.

Descending the steep whitewashed stairs with twisty wooden hand-rails there was a dining room at the front with a large Victorian antique table and sideboard and a porch where we could leave all our boots and coats. At the other end of the house, adjoining the large, cosy sitting room was the modern, cream painted kitchen with dishwasher, large fridge and freezer and plenty of storage space. Here was everything you could wish for cooking up hearty meals, with plenty of crockery and pots and pans and a wide selection of cookery books. Awaiting us was a welcome tray with a personal welcome note and tea and coffee and a bottle of delicious local apple juice.

Down in the valley was the attractive small town of Crickhowell, with several good pubs and food shops as well as an out door activity shop to supply whatever you might need for all the biking, walking, climbing, cycling and all the other outdoor activities for which this part of Wales is well known. We bought some local Welsh lamb for dinner from the butcher and then adjourned for some tea and cakes in the Court room cafe above the Old Market Hall which serves good home cooked lunches as well. Although we’d made plans to try the Bear Hotel, an award winning old coaching inn, for dinner or perhaps the restaurant at the Nantyffyn Cider Inn for something a bit more gourmet, our plans were thwarted by the incoming snow. Although we made it safely back up the mountain to the cottage on snowy tracks , we didn’t feel like risking another drive down in the dark.

The next day we ventured out on a trip to the Big Pit, the National Coal Museum of Wales which is only a short drive away at Blaenafon but had to abandon our plans when we made it through a minor blizzard to get there, only to find that it had just closed because of the bad weather. I was disappointed as the visit includes a trip underground into the coal mine with helmets and head torches, that I thought the children would enjoy – the museum is also free. After our experience in the blizzard, we gave up on the sightseeing and just enjoyed the walking trails on the hillside in and around the cottage.

The thing that impressed us most were the number of entertainments and conveniences available at Laswern Fawr, clearly showing the owners had thought of everything for our comfort (perhaps they knew that rain and snow are always worth preparing for in Wales). There were two shelves of DVD films, a large rack of music CDs, a chest full of board games as well as WiFi. I have to confess, that as a travel blogger, it was the wifi that sold it for me – sad as it might be, the thought of 3 days with no internet access was unbearable, so I was relieved that it all worked perfectly, despite the remote location! Whatever home comforts you enjoy to spend the evening after a long walk in the Brecon Beacons, our Welsh cottage at Laswern Fawr seemed to be able to provide. If I ever have to shut myself away in comfort from the distractions of the big city to write that long awaited novel, this will be the place.

We booked Laswern Fawr through Brecon Beacons Holiday Cottages who kindly rented it to us at a discounted rate. They are the specialist in holiday cottage rentals in the Brecon Beacons and have over 250 holiday properties of different sizes to choose from in this beautiful area of Wales.

As soon as my husband stepped into our Welsh holiday cottage at Laswern Fawr in the Brecon Beacons and saw the wood burning stove in the open fireplace and the cosy red velvet wing chair, he settled in and took charge of the fire while the rest of us made ourself at home. I concluded that it's a man thing to fiddle with logs, bellows and firelighters and left him to it.

We'd arrived in two cars from Bristol following the extremely detailed directions, turning off the main road through the valley and up the hill on increasingly steep and narrow, muddy tracks, along an old tramway then down a steep drive to the cottage, built into the hillside.

To the background tick-tock and hourly chimes of the old clock on the wall, I could almost imagine myself to be a country farmer's wife, setting the kettle on the blackened range for a cup of tea.

Upstairs we found three double rooms and two singles, sleeping 8 people in all and ideal for two families or an extended group to enjoy a relaxing break. We'd elected to spend a few days away from it all in the school holidays, bringing two of our children and a gaggle of their teenage friends to get away from the bustle and traffic of Bristol.

Here was everything you could wish for cooking up hearty meals, with plenty of crockery and pots and pans and a wide selection of cookery books.</itunes:summary>

I’m in the Brecon Beacons in Wales for a short break and this is the snowy scene outside the cottage where we’re staying. We arrived in rain and the next day woke up to steadily falling snow. We ventured out yesterday to see something of the Brecon National Park and just about made it back to the cottage.

Snow at Laswern Fawr near Crickhowell in Wales

The incongruous thing is that although there’s snow up on the side of the mountain where we’re staying, in the valley in the small town of Crickhowell, we can see green grass in the fields as the snow’s only up on the high ground.

Sheep at Laswern Fawr near Crickhowell in Wales

This morning, we had to push my husband’s car up the icy, steep hill up to the road with wheels skidding. Half an hour of gritting and snow shovelling later, he made it and was on his way back to Bristol, where the snow is a once-in-a-blue-moon occurrance. I’m here for an extra day and will have to get up that icy hill tomorrow – wish me luck!

We recently took our teen princesses camping at Trericket Mill in Wales, where they run a Bed and Breakfast, Bunkhouse and small campsite in their orchards. Very nice it was too, but the pride of place was for their renovated outside lavvy which overlooked the river and bridge across to the orchards. You couldn’t wish for a more picturesque scene of rural life while doing your business, what with the chickens and ducks running around.

You’d have to be fairly brave to leave the door open to take advantage of the scenery, with the other guests coming and going. There was a sign on the door proclaiming “Ty Bach Yn y Coedwig – Arachnaphobes may not enter”. But there was only a friendly toy spider hanging from the ceiling. If you’re a Welsh speaker do give me a full translation – my Google Translator made a scramble of it.
There was once a princess who lived in Bristol with her travelling mother and father and her stay-at-home brothers, who longed for adventure with her friends. Because she was dearly beloved (although she never kept her room tidy) her parents granted her heart’s desire to go camping with her fellow princesses, and waved a magic wand to make it so.

And so it was that the ten princesses set off in the palace mini-van, driven by the king (the chauffeur was on holiday) and arrived at their fairy dell in the kingdom of Welsh Wales. They found a friendly miller and his wife who had an old water mill with a bunk house and an orchard that was perfect for camping. Here it seemed the perfect place to experience the joys of Welsh camping (damp grass, fresh air and camp fires). They took with them provisions for the finest spaghetti bolognaise, tinned tomato soup and bacon and eggs (for everyone knows that you must have bacon and eggs for breakfast when camping).

The king and queen watched over them as they frollicked in the river and chatted around the campfire about things that interest princesses. Soon the next day dawned and the real adventures began. They found a leafy glade and tiptoed barefoot and bikini-clad through the ferns and the beech leaves that surrounded the mill. There in seclusion they bathed in the river, even jumping bravely into an icy plunge pool to prove their daring. No frog princes were seen, kissed, or even thought of, for these were independent minded young princesses.

In the afternoon, when they’d had their fill of leafy glades, they visited the nearby town of Hay-on-Wye where people came from far and wide to buy and sell books. There was even a festival held there once a year, where bards and prophets, such as Bill Clinton and Desmond Tutu could be heard to utter wise words. They sought out yet another bathing spot nearby in the river where canoists drifted past and spent an afternoon relaxing and sunbathing. Naturally they kept their sunglasses on at all times, in order to remain incognito. During the evening they toasted marshmellows over the camp fire and sang songs of friendship.

After the wet weekend camping in Cornwall last August, when our tent practically blew away and we had to decamp to a friend’s holiday cottage, I’d vowed my camping days were over. Nevertheless, when my sister in law suggested a camping weekend together in South Wales, on the beautiful Gower peninsula, I took the optimistic view. In my imagination I was already basking in the sunshine with a view across the fields to the sea, nibbling on strawberries with a bottle of white wine chilling in the cool box.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_-wsPgKPWM2k/SJtu3Q-R5bI/AAAAAAAACcI/yd3IJtP2zR8/s320/P1100499.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5231897287849010610" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_-wsPgKPWM2k/SJt4h_skUiI/AAAAAAAACeI/VitbXTGYZkY/s320/P1100513.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5231907917550342690" />

The realist in me remembered to pack the cosiest sleeping bags, fleeces, wellies and waterproofs although my husband managed to leave my down pillow behind. We set off from Bristol in sunshine but by the time we passed Swansea 2 hrs later the rain was pitter pattering on the car windscreen and on arrival at the campsite we had to rush to put the tent up before the rain really set in.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_-wsPgKPWM2k/SJtubs4BE4I/AAAAAAAACcA/4B1rJVlzBjE/s320/P1100587.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5231896814302598018" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_-wsPgKPWM2k/SJtwTzdyxCI/AAAAAAAACcY/cHlYex3Mmew/s320/P1100579.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5231898877655958562" />

The Saturday dawned a little brighter and after the morning ritual of shower, mug of tea and bacon and egg rolls with lashings of ketchup, I set off across the fields with by husband to search out the nearest beach. We followed the footpath signs, climbed several stiles, said good morning to a herd of grey and white cows and scrambled down to a rocky cove, which had once been an area for stone quarrying. I pictured smugglers landing here in secret but it was not really suitable for the sunbathing and surfing we had in mind.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_-wsPgKPWM2k/SJtyRXIAOfI/AAAAAAAACcw/yJcFxBTXkHs/s320/P1100578.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5231901034711890418" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_-wsPgKPWM2k/SJtxEznOfJI/AAAAAAAACcg/MFFrrtAjLIM/s320/P1100582.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5231899719509114002" />

Instead we drove 5 minutes up the road to Rhossili, owned by the National Trust, with a wide sweep of sand stretching into the distance in one direction and the rocky peninsula of Worm’s head in the other. After a steep climb down the path, laden with all our beach gear, we settled ourselves down for a few hours of relaxation, playing rounders and body boarding for those with wetsuits. Luckily the sun shone but the wind was deceptively cooling and later I discovered a few red patches of sunburn. The beach was so big that it never felt crowded and we found out later that many people are put off by the long walk down to the beach – all the more room for us, I thought.

By early afternoon we were feeling a little hungry so we settled ourselves on the terrace of The Bay cafe, with a great view over the beach, and ordered some big bowls of chips, baked potatoes and paninis. It was all very pleasant, so we returned for dinner there the next evening – unlike Cornwall there didn’t seem to be so many stylish places around to eat, but this was a cut above the rest. Otherwise we relied on the portable gas barbie to cook up bacon for breakfast and steaks and sausages for supper – all typical camping food.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_-wsPgKPWM2k/SJt1nrL4V6I/AAAAAAAACdg/FY_gcOQeW7E/s320/P1100552.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5231904716588865442" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_-wsPgKPWM2k/SJt1MX0AMkI/AAAAAAAACdY/_U_USUujHuw/s320/P1100551.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5231904247531975234" />

The next day we decided to give <a href="http://www.the-gower.com/villages/Porteynon/porteynon.htm"target="_blank">Port Eynon beach a try, 10 minutes in the other direction, as I was keen to check out the <a href="http://www.yha.org.uk/find-accommodation/wales/hostels/Port-Eynon/index.aspx"target="_blank">Youth Hostel there in an old lifeboat station, thinking of possible alternatives to camping for a weekend break. The village was surrounded by several caravan parks and the beach had many rock pools which were exposed at low tide. The concensus was that it was not as nice as Rhossili, but we spent a couple of hours there sheltered in front of the sand dunes. I followed to path up on to the cliffs, through the yellow gorse to take in the stunning views over to the next bay.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_-wsPgKPWM2k/SJt2dOu30YI/AAAAAAAACdo/41eiacYL_vE/s320/P1100594.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5231905636663939458" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_-wsPgKPWM2k/SJt25NCN3NI/AAAAAAAACdw/BuYskukITDk/s320/P1100598.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5231906117244542162" />

On the way back, we decided to check out another nearby beach at <a href="http://www.the-gower.com/beaches/mewslade/mewslade.htm"target="_blank">Mewslade which had been recommended. When we parked in the nearby field it didn’t seem very promising, but we walked down a small valley with a nature reserve, scrambled over the rocks and arrived at a fabulous beach with wide sandy stretches at low tide, rockpools and steep cliffs around. This could have been a happy place to spend an afternoon, but already the rain was setting in, so we decided to return to the campsite.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_-wsPgKPWM2k/SJt3WShHkVI/AAAAAAAACd4/BkBip714hxQ/s320/P1100599.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5231906616932536658" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_-wsPgKPWM2k/SJt3-7jdGTI/AAAAAAAACeA/OOXvNt73pnE/s320/P1100586.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5231907315142957362" />

Although we were due to return to Bristol the next morning, we decided that we’d pack up before dark and drive back to Bristol that evening, drawn on by the promise of a warm house and our own comfortable beds, rather than a lilo and sleeping bag. Camping in Wales and Cornwall is popular for families on a budget, but you have to be prepared for the changeable English summer and pray that you’ll enjoy some sunshine in between the showers.

If you fancy a camping break yourself, we stayed at <a href="http://www.pittoncross.co.uk/"target="_blank">Pitton Cross Campsite near Rhossili. The other recommended campsite which was sadly full when we tried to book is the one at <a href="http://www.threecliffsbay.com/"target="_blank">Three Cliffs Bay, regularly picked as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

You can also read more about what’s going on on the Gower peninsula on the blog at <a href="http://www.welcometogower.co.uk/"target="_blank">Welcome to Gower.
