More wood carvings at Anse Chastenet in St Lucia

I love to see art that is part of it’s surroundings and these wood carvings that my parents saw at the Anse Chastenet resort in St Lucia are a fine example. They’re by local wood sculptor Lawrence Deligney who seems to come up with something new each year when my parents visit.

After my parents visited Anse Chastenet last year, I wrote about the artists of St Lucia, many of whom have work displayed around the hotel as well as the wood carvings at Anse Chastenet that they saw in the public areas of the hotel.

I think these are a great example of the type of souvenir you can see and enjoy in it’s surroundings, and perhaps buy if they suit your style of decor. I live in a Victorian, traditional English style house, so maybe these carvings wouldn’t fit in, but I love to appreciate this kind of art where it looks best, in the place where it belongs.

And if you want to see what the owners have been building next door to Anse Chastenet check out the review of the sister hotel Jade Mountain over at Mr & Mrs Smith blog. When my parents first saw the hotel being built, they thought it looked like a huge ship about to topple off the cliff, but now it’s finished and the planting has grown up around it’s become a haven of luscious luxury - check out those infinity pools in every room with a view of the Pitons.

Wood-carvings at Anse Chastenet in St Lucia

My parents have just returned from the Caribbean resort of Anse Chastenet on St Lucia - in a previous post I wrote about some of the artists that are on display in the hotel. They took these photos of sculptures in the hotel by the resident sculptor, Lawrence Deligny, which I just had to share with you. Take a look at more of his work on the Anse Chastenet website.

I adore those swan like lovers - it’s entitled ‘The Kiss’. This place has to be my dream destination for a second honeymoon.

And here are a few more pictures in case you need any more tempting to visit this beautiful island - I certainly don’t.

Artists of St Lucia

As the days in Bristol turn greyer, my thoughts turn to the turquoise skys of the Caribbean where my parents are have flown to escape the British winter. For the last few years they have returned in January to the beautiful Anse Chastenet resort on St Lucia, and who can blame them?

Viewed from the window of my computer screen, it looks wonderful - perched on the side of a lush green mountainside, with an idyllic beach below and the famous view of the Pitons in the back-ground.

The resort uses local artists to decorate its rooms and a postcard my parents bought back one year, of local boys on a beach gazing out to sea, caught my eye. It reminded me of my ten year old son messing about with his friends.

I looked up the artist, Jonathan Gladding and liked his work so much that I ordered the print and designed my downstairs loo around it. I hoped that it’s turquoise walls would remind me of being on holiday in hotter places.

So far my little room of contemplation is the closest I’ve managed to get to St Lucia but I feel a visit can’t be too far in the future.

The Anse Chastenet resort has its own art gallery and here’s a taste of some of the artists you can see in the hotel and gallery;

Jonathan Gladding is an American who originally came to St Lucia as a Peace Corps volunteer and has now settled on the island - check out his website here. I especially love the classic views of the pittons and the children having fun on the beach.

Stefan Szczesny is a German artist now based in Saint Tropez and his murals are on display in the hotel - check out his website here.

Elvira Bach - check out her website here.

Mary Weber is an American who lives in St Lucia and is exhibited by many of the art galleries there - check out her website here.

Ron Savory is a Guyanese painter, living and working in St. Lucia - check out his website here.

Claude Sandoz - check out his work on the Anse Chastenet art gallery.

Matthew Paul - check out his work on the Anse Chastenet art gallery.

Thanks to davitydave on flickr.com for the use of his photo. Other images taken from the Anse Chastenet website.
