I’m in Munich this weekend, seeing something of the old town and the Christmas Markets, although in the couple of days we’re here, I doubt I’ll get much further than that. When we came up from the underground Metro station onto Marienplatz, the warm, sweet smell of gingerbread hit me.
This afternoon we visited the Resindenz Palace in the centre of Munich – beautiful but I feel as if I’ve over-indulged on that sweet gingerbread with all the over-the-top gilt and plasterwork. I’m Just back from a typical Bavarian evening meal of roasted knuckle of pork with potato dumplings washed down with beer and pear schnaps. Tasty but tomorrow I’m going in search of something fresh and green.
All the shop windows seem to be filled with evening wear of the traditional German kind – colourful checked dirndl skirts which you wear with a corset affair and white blouse underneath, for the elegant barmaid look.
So far we’ve had rain but snow is forecast tomorrow, so we’re hoping for some pretty postcard Christmas scenes.
Wish you were here!
