Friday photo – Pavement dreams in London

January 9, 2009 by

Today I’m joining in with the Friday photo over at Delicious Baby with a photo from my travels.

This week I was in London and stopped to talk to Brian who I spotted drawing pictures in chalk outside the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.

He told me that this is his favourite spot for practicing his art, although he sometimes works on the Embankment too. He does it to perfect his art and to bring him a little beer money, and his favourite subjects are churches and ships. Sadly he rarely gets to complete more than six pictures before the London rain washes them away, and then he has to start over again.

If you visit the V & A, say hi to Brian for me give him a bit of beer money to keep the streets of London colourful.

I love sidewalk chalk art! Organizers of the Detroit Festival of Arts created a separate area for large chalk art pieces at a couple of the annual fests. It was always fun to check throughout the three-day event to see how some of the more ambitious pieces were coming along.

This makes me think of Mary Poppins (book and movie) when they travel into the sidewalk art – and end up coming back to reality when it rains!

Something so Zen about making art that is transitory like this.

Makes me think of Dublin and how they’ve got some great chalk artists, too. Cheers for sharing.
