Postcard No 2 from Istria – in Croatia

Here is my second postcard from the province of Istria in Croatia, where I’m on holiday with my family. We spent a lazy morning relaxing by the pool at Hotel Laguna Molindrio, watching the animators trying to drum up enthusiasm for water-aerobics, without much success.

But in the afternoon I could bear the inertia no longer and dragged the family out to hire bikes and take a cycle ride along the coastline. The seashore here in Croatia is typically rocky rather than sandy, but backed by pine woods where you can laze in the shade. We cycled along the path passing by busy family beaches, quieter spots with the odd naturist and club style sections with daybeds and DJ music – there’s something for everyone here.

When we’d cycled long enough to be a bit hot and bothered, we just parked the bikes and peeled off the T-shirts and shorts for a quick cooling dip. Then followed up with a lazy milkshake in the cafe. The water is shades of deep green and every so often a tour boat would create some swell to give you a taste of the salt water splashing over you.

Tomorrow, I’m plotting to drag the family out in the car to see some medieval hill-top towns and go truffle-hunting.
