Staying at Residenza Madri Pie – in Rome

June 3, 2008 by

If you’re looking for a peaceful guest house, very close to the Vatican, with religious connections, then Residenza Madri Pie where we stayed on our recent visit to Rome may be for you.

The Madri Pie religious society was founded in the 18th century with the aim of educating people from all social backgrounds and it has active missions in Peru. Their guest house is situated five minutes walk to the west side of St Peter’s square on the less touristy side of the Vatican, in a more residential neighbourhood. As my mother said, we could practically wave to the Pope from our bedroom window.

The Rezidenza has the look and feel of a convent, with cool marble floors, dark antique furniture in the public areas and simply furnished rooms. Although the reception was staffed by respectable looking gentlemen in jackets and ties who all spoke good English, our breakfast was served in the morning by the nuns from the religious order. There is also a chapel which can be used by visiting groups.

One of the nicest things was the terrace and garden at the back of the hotel which was a pleasant place to sit after a hot day sightseeing. There was also a large car-park which is unusual to find so close to the centre of Rome.

Unfortunately the one internet terminal was not working while I was there, and I got the feeling that internet access was not a high priority with most of the guests who were families, groups or middle aged couples.

Accomodation in Rome is generally expensive but I think this was a good value mid-price option, especially for those who want to be close to the Vatican and St Peter’s. Double rooms were €125 per night including breakfast and taxes.
