The party begins at Zakynthos airport - in Greece

In the airplane and the airport at Zakynthos today, it felt as if I had stumbled into the bar district of Bristol. If you venture out to most city centres in the UK on a Saturday night you’ll see large groups of guys and girls out on the town in in search of cheap drinks and a good time. Sometimes there’ll be a hen or stag party all in matching fancy dress, tiaras or devil horns. This was the atmosphere among some of the travellers heading out to Zakynthos today.

On the way, we encountered not one or two but at least six large groups of girls or guys in matching T-shirts proclaiming their holiday in Zante 09. The phenomenon of going on a cheap holiday to Greece or Spain with your mates to spend your time in one long bar crawl is not a new one. Thomas Cook has been running these 18-30s holidays for years. But to have matching T-shirts made for your group is something I hadn’t seen before - it’s a new twist on tribal behaviour. An anthropologist would have a field day.

The popular spot for this kind of group on the island of Zakynthos is Laganas, a lively resort with a 24 hour night-life. If you want to meet other 20-somethings and party, party, party fuelled by copious amounts of alcohol, this is the place for you, but if you’re looking for the unspoilt, authentic Greek atmosphere, I’d avoid it like the plague.
