Seafood and beer at Cervejaria Trinidade in Lisbon

This is a story about a fast food meal, with no golden arches in sight at the Cervejaria Trinidade in Lisbon. We were taking a last Sunday morning wander around the streets of Lisbon, climbing the hill up to the Chiado district where we had spent the evening before listening to Fado music and enjoying the Christmas lights.

I realised that we were just stone’s throw from one of my brother in law’s restaurant recommendations, and having enjoyed a great meal at one of his other favorites at Casa do Alentejo on the Friday night, we decided to give it a try. It was our final taste Lisbon, but it was mid-day and we needed to back at our hotel at 1pm, to get to the airport by 2pm for our afternoon flight. We were keen to enjoy our weekend to the last moment, not to mention mouthful.

Some bread, salad, french fries and a plate of prawns, was our fast food lunch at Cervejaria Trinidade . The waiter was smiling and swift, he could see we had to dash. Still there was a little time to admire the mosaic motifs on the wall by Maria Keil, inspired by the typical black and white stone pavements you find in Lisbon. In the other rooms were the traditional painted azulejo tiles from the 1860s depicting the four seasons.

This restaurant is known for it’s fresh seafood that you can see on display in the entrance and it’s wide range of beer. It was pretty busy and I suspect it’s always full too. Once a convent, then one of the first breweries in Portugal, this place has a long history.

In the 1700s the convent was continually destroyed and rebuilt after fires and the great earthquake of 1755 before being converted into a brewery in 1836. Were we in the refectory or the cloisters? I forget, but the monks painted on the tiles at the back of the room looked as if they were enjoying the beer too.

Quickly the prawns disappeared and we were on our way home – so much better than a dry sandwich at the airport!

If this is fast food in Portugal, I'm all for it. The prawns sound delicious.
