A bluebell wood in Bristol at Abbots Leigh

You can visit a lovely bluebell wood in Bristol at Abbots Leigh where the bluebells bloom in the early spring. But shh, don’t tell everyone as it’s a local secret! What could be more English than a bluebell wood in April? It’s one of those things that marks the seasons like asparagus in May or strawberries in June.

This walk in Abbots Leigh is one of the fun walks around Bristol to enjoy at any time of year. Check below for the handy Google map I made to guide you to my secret haunt. But, if you can’t make it then take a virtual walk through the bluebells with me.

First park in the small car park at Abbots Pool. If you walk on down the track, you’ll pass the lake where you can dabble and look for tadpoles in the springtime.

The walk starts from Abbots Pool

But to see one of the prettiest bluebell woods in Bristol, you need to track back to the road you’ve just turned off. Cross over beside the orchard where sheep often graze and up the track on the other side.

It’s a few minutes past the water trough and the place where the track forks. Go past the metal gate and up the track to where the wood starts on your right.

Then through the break in the fence which is marked as a path and into the wood that straddles the crest of the rise. It’s a favourite with mountain-bikers too.

Now you can see the bluebells in clouds of blue amongst the trees and smell the gentle scent in the air. It’s better not to pick wildflowers, but perhaps it won’t hurt to waft one under your nose as you amble along.

When you get to the end of the wood, you can drop down onto the road and follow the circular walk marked on my map below. You go up the track on the other side where the road bends and cross the tall stile. Then go through the beech wood and fields to bring you back towards Abbots Pool.

Enjoy the walk in the bluebell wood – maybe see you there next year.
