In Clifton Village there’s a little shop that Bristol chocolate lovers in the know pop into regularly. I know it’s popular with discerning locals as I’ve bumped into one set of neighbours on their way there and another neighbour brought me some of their chocolate as a gift. It’s a chocolate bar that goes without any noticable signage to advertise its presence, yet whenever I pass by it’s always full.
Today we walked across the green space we call the Downs past the groups of students with portable BBQs and couples sunbathing. Past the bushes smothered with dog-roses and elderflower and the children climbing the trees. Past the Observatory and Bristol’s best known landmark, the Clifton suspension bridge.
After so much exertion, we felt we deserved a home made ice cream (chocolate of course) although we passed on the hot chocolate drink in favour of some traditionally made lemonade. This place is a friendly haven for chocolate lovers. You can choose from some gorgeous cakes to have with your hot chocolate, or treat yourself to an ice cream or choose some of their own range of hand made chocolates to take home. They also do soups, sandwiches and light lunches but that isn’t really the point of Bar Chocolat.
My favourite are the small tasting bars of unusually flavoured chocolates - how about Orange and Geranium, sweet Thai chilli or Moroccan mint? If you’re tempted you can buy them on line, but I highly recommend a visit in person too.

I’m pretty sure I would love this shop. If I ever make it to Bristol after traveling to London this year I’m definitely gonna pay a visit. Bar Chocolat, I will keep that in mind.
